DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Mealonie Poke sat down with Ben Stanfield to talk about the upcoming Juneteenth at the George Washington Carver Museum in Dothan.
For those who may not know, Juneteenth is when the last set of slaves were emancipated on June 19, 1865. Prior to 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation passed and the slaves that were in Galveston, Texas didn’t know they were freed.
Juneteenth will be celebrated in the coming weeks. The museum will hold a soul food festival at Foster Fest Friday. Tickets will be on sale for $10 which will get you 10 tastings of the local restaurants and chefs competing in several categories at the festival.
You can get more information about the upcoming Juneteenth events at the museum on North Foster Fest.
