NEWTON, Ala. (WDHN) — Lonnie Daniels has been doing business in Newton for 51 years and said he was elated when he won the mayoral race.

“I was very pleasantly surprised that people supported me the way they did, and it really makes me appreciate being apart of this town,” Newton Mayor-Elect Lonnie Daniels said.

Daniels has many plans for Newton while he is the mayor. Some of those include improving the Memorial Park and the John Hutto Park.

He wants to add fencing and space to the cemetery, and he wants to work to continue to improve the elementary school.

“Our school is in the top 20 percent in Alabama, which is very good,” Daniels said. “We’re proud of that, and we want to continue to help them.”

Daniels said as a businessman, his goal is to bring in more business to Newton, businesses that he knows people will support.

“Any type of business that will improve Newton,” Daniels said. “I liked to possibly see the Dollar General become something like the Dollar General in Slocomb where they have fresh meat and produce. That’s something I would like to work towards.”

He said knows he has a lot of work to do, but he’s ready to help the community.

“Just want to say I appreciate all the people in Newton and all they’ve done for me over the years,” Daniels said. “I’m here to help them back if they need me. They know where I am out at the shop, anytime they want, to come I’ll be there.”
