Man accused of raping Southeast Health patient

“The safety, well-being and privacy of those involved are our top concerns at Southeast Health. We are treating this incident with the seriousness it deserves and we contacted law enforcement immediately to perform an investigation. As this is an ongoing criminal investigation involving patients with privacy rights, there are no additional details we can provide at this time. We have and will cooperate fully with the investigation.”

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Barbour County man is behind bars for allegedly raping a patient at Southeast Health in Dothan.

According to Lt. Lynn Watkins with the Dothan police department, Derrick Gilbert, 38, is accused of raping a fellow patient inside the medical center’s behavioral medicine unit on Oct. 28.

Gilbert made his first appearance in Houston County District Court Tuesday morning in front of Judge Benjamin Lewis.

Court records show Gilbert has an extensive criminal history, which includes harassment, theft, assault, burglary, criminal trespassing, and breaking and entering.
