DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Wednesday was the 55th birthday for the radio station WOOF FM 99.7.
“WOOF FM 55 years, we’re very excited to be celebrating the 55th birthday,” DJ Amy Daniel said.
The station was started by Agnis Simpson in 1947. Simpson gave airtime to black quartet gospels and local preachers.
“Both of us worked with Mrs. Agnis Dowling Simpson, and she was a wonderful true pioneer,” Daniel said. “Not just for people anywhere, for people in radio, but for women as well.”
For the past 55 years, the station has gone through a lot of cultural and technical changes.
“We used these things back in the day called carts,” Afternoon Anchor Deborah Pearson said. “Some people might remember them as, what were they called…. 8 tracks back in the day. We started putting news on these things from a Marantz to this, and now we’re totally digital.”
WOOF FM is looking to continue its success in the future.
