***Correction: The HPD said Pardons and Parole helped with the chase. Alabama's Board of Pardons and Parole says this was not the case.

HARTFORD, Ala. (WDHN) — Hartford police arrested a man Tuesday in a high-speed chase that ended up running their own police chief off the road.

A member of the HPD said Chief Annie Ward is fine, and the suspect, Derenzo Alexander Payne, is now facing charges for fugitive from justice, attempting to elude law enforcement, possession of cocaine, third-degree criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment.

Payne also had warrants in three counties in Florida.

The Geneva County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and Slocomb Police Department all helped take Payne into custody.
