Grand jury indicts former teacher accused of having sex with student

Local News

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Houston County grand jury has indicted a teacher accused of having sex with a student.

On May 3, Dothan police arrested math teacher Julia Engle after Dothan City Schools reported a case of a teacher having sex with a 16-year-old male student. Engle used to work at the old Dothan High School location before the consolidation took effect.

Engle and two students were then brought in for interviews, and afterward, the police charged her with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19 years.

As the investigation went on, Engle received two more charges for allegedly sending obscene materials to the student.

Investigator Lacy Schulmerich told WDHN on May 22 that the relationship lasted several weeks before Engle’s arrest.

Following her indictment on Oct. 1, Engle’s jury trial is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2020, according to court records. She is also scheduled for arraignment this Halloween.
