KINSEY, Ala. (WDHN) — An Ozark man is dead after being shot multiple times while committing a home invasion, according to Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza.

Valenza said the sheriff’s office was called to a burglary call on Nomad Circle in Kinsey at around 2 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, deputies found suspect Dantrail Mills shot multiple times by the homeowners.

The sheriff’s office investigation found that Mills was familiar with a resident of the house, having possibly had a child with the resident. Valenza said it is not known what their relationship was like at the time of the break-in.

Valenza said Mills parked 90 to 100 feet away from the victims’ home and exited his vehicle with a loaded gun. The investigation found that Mills fired a round, which is believed to have gone through the home and hit a baby bed.

The child was not in the bed at the time.

Mills is said to have then thrown a bicycle into a bedroom window before kicking the door, prompting a male resident to shoot him multiple times. Mills was taken to a hospital where he died Tuesday.

There is no known motive yet, but according to Valenza, Mills has an extensive criminal record with 28 prior arrests. At the time of the incident, he was on a federal release program for a federal weapons charge.
