DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — With Thanksgiving two days away, Johns Chapel A.M.E Church is sharing free Thanksgiving meals.
Thanks to the church, Enterprise residents and church members can get a hot and juicy fried chicken box free of charge.
Pastor Willie White said providing the meals is an action of God’s work and during a time of darkness, the pandemic, the meals can help residents.
“By assisting people before Thanksgiving, we know that this is going to help many families right here in the city of Enterprise, Alabama,” Willie said.
Residents wrapped around the church as they waited in line for some chicken. Many told WDHN the gesture was a good idea that other churches should follow.
“Well with the COVID, yes, I think it’s a good thing,” Eddie Scott, resident said. “I think more churches should get involved, more churches should do things like this. It’s a good thing.”
Several members of the church pitched in to help give out the boxes. They expressed how happy they were to be spreading God’s love.
“It is exciting, this is the first time we’ve done things like this since I’ve been a member of this church and I am just joyed, I’m overwhelmed,” Jimmy Boykins, member said.
Enterprise resident and the man behind the chicken, Maxie Hazzard, was the person warming families’ bellies, along with his partner, Chet.
“We just have a warm heart to help people and that’s what we’re doing,” Hazzard said. “We did 50 boxes and we hope it be a blessing to their soul.”
