Dothan public works director finishes up final week of service

Local News

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Dothan’s public director is working his last week in office.

Charles Metzger said he has mixed feelings about his journey coming to an end. He started out as the city’s first traffic engineer in 1984 and moved up the ranks to public director.

During his time, he has seen the city expand with various road projects that he’s been responsible for, such as the work on Westgate from a two-lane to a five-lane from 84 to 431. Now, it’s in progress of being connected with Honeysuckle Road.

“I think I enjoyed recently these roundabouts and things that we have done that people have kind of said, ‘this is not gonna work and this is gonna be a mess,’ and yet we had a lot of positive comments about the one, especially park and taylor that we just recently did.”

Metzger says he’s not sure who will replace him, but he says his staff is second to none, and the city is in good hands.
