DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Dothan Fire Department is looking for sponsors for its “Going for the Gold” event, according to a Facebook post.
“Going for the Gold” is a childhood cancer awareness event that seeks to shine a spotlight on how the disease affects local families and provide a way to support them.
According to a letter from the department, cancer has also impacted the department directly, with two children within the “Fire Department family” having recently struggled with cancer.
Childhood Cancer Awareness month is traditionally celebrated in September, but the event will be scheduled for Aug. 24 T 3:00 p.m. In September, gold ribbons are used to symbolize childhood cancer awareness.
“Going for the Gold” will include a 5K trail run/walk and a corn hole tournament along with various children’s activities and entertainment from local artists.
However, the department says that for the event to be successful, it will need sponsors to help support it. Patrons can become direct sponsors, sign up for the race or buy merchandise for the event.
More information can be found on the fire department’s Facebook.
