Do’s and Dont’s of Christmas travel safety

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — With Christmas only a few days away, Dothan Police recommend a few tips before the holiday begins, whether traveling or staying home.

“During the holidays people know that there’s going to be more expensive items in the home that people are buying for presents,” Dothan Investigator Paul Cochrine said.

If you are traveling for the weekend, here are a few tips:

  1. Leave lights on inside the house.
  2. Let a trusted neighbor know you’re traveling.
  3. Leave a key with them instead of outside or under a doormat.
  4. Keep valuables out of sight.
  5. Keep your blinds closed.

Cochrane also said to make sure if you have a security system or cameras to check them before you leave.

Most of his tips for people staying at home were similar to those traveling, but he did list off not leaving gifts in your cars if you are hiding them from family members but to find a safe place inside your home.

Cochrane also gave some do not’s when it comes to holiday travel.

“Definitely if you’re going out of town don’t post it on social media,” He said. “Make sure that you post your pictures after you get back, after you return. After Christmas, don’t leave your empty boxes for tv’s or electronics by the trash, cut them up.”
