DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Early Wednesday morning as the sun was rising, Dothan airport’s first departure of the day had a maintenance issue, causing a Delta airplane to make an emergency landing.
Both the Dothan Police Department and Dothan Fire Department responded to the call.
“The 6 a.m. departure this morning has a minor mechanical issue,” airport Adam Hartzog said. “After departure. they turned around and landed safely, and Delta sent a recovery flight, and it’s already on the ground loading that airplane up and so the passengers are already headed back to Atlanta.”
Hartzog told WDHN News that the plane was carrying roughly 4,500 pounds of fuel and 45, passengers before it had to be grounded.
According to airport officials, the airplane landed safely within approximately 15 minutes after identifying the maintenance issue and without incident.
Hartzog would not comment further regarding the specific nature of what caused the maintenance issue.
“Safety is first and foremost for the airport as well as for Delta Airlines so when they have issues like this, they quickly fix those issues and get another airplane in for our passengers so it keeps the downtime to a minimum,” he said.
On most days, the Dothan Regional Airport has four incoming and four outgoing flights.
So far, this is only the third time the Dothan airport has had to cancel a flight this year, but the incident did not cause any other flights to be affected.
