DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Dothan Police Department is warning citizens of card skimmers that are being used at gas station pumps.

Dothan police received notice of a credit card skimmer being used the Marathon Station on the 3300 block of West Main Street Tuesday after an employee found it.

The employee noticed the skimmer when they realized the pump’s security seal was tampered with. A release from the department states that the device was likely placed the night before it was found.

To help prevent anyone else from falling victim to any sneaky skimmers, the Dothan Police Department provided some advice to help avoid losing your credit info:

  • Take a close look at the pump: Avoid pumps that have had the seal cut, removed, or appears to be tampered with. If you believe the seal has been tampered with, notify the gas station attendant immediately.
  • Pay inside, instead of at the pump
  • Check your credit card statements and sign up for fraud alerts

For those affected by credit card fraud, the department advises they “contact your credit card company immediately and make a report with your local law enforcement agency.”
