COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN)— Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton said elderly residents in his
county are being bombarded with a host of telephone scams.
According to Sutton, the worst is is “spoofing.” Criminals purchase local phone numbers and then intimidate and threaten individuals for them to send money.
In many cases, the callers are not even in this country.
“I received one this weekend, and it from a local call in Enterprise, Alabama,” Sutton said. “However, the individual had trouble speaking English. They seemed to be from a foreign country.”
Sutton also said if anyone has a question concerning the validity of a phone call, they should contact local law enforcement.
