DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Chaos erupted in the streets of downtown Dothan just a few minutes before 6:00 as gunfire was heard throughout one neighborhood.

Dothan police arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter around Arlington Avenue following a reported shooting Thursday evening.

“It would appear to stem from an altercation that occurred between a couple of individuals, which led to blows and subsequently gunplay,” Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish said. “So, that’s really where we are at this time. We do know that there are three people that have been shot.”

Out of the three people shot, one was reported to be in serious condition and was taken to Southeast Health. The crime scene technicians and investigators arrived at the scene shortly after to start canvassing the area.

“We do know that a couple of houses were hit by stray bullets,” Parrish said. “We are going to be confirming that no one was in those houses and perhaps injured as well.”

Parrish said that the investigation will continue into the night until officers locate the suspect and put somebody in jail.

“We’re not sure if some of the bystanders were innocent people that were just spectating,” Parrish said. “We’ll have to iron all those details out as the investigation continues.”

Parrish also said that they are not sure if it was just one shooter or if there were multiple and that they hope to have more details on this event in the morning.
