EUFUALA, Ala. (WDHN) — Memorial Day weekend brings a lot of people to the lake and with that there are a few things that state troopers say you need to have on your boat.
“One wearable life jacket for each person on the boat,” Alabama Law Enforcement Agency trooper Thomas Kennington said. “It needs to be readily accessible. Each boat needs to have a type 4 throw-able life jacket, and that can be the square cushion type or life-ring. Every vessel needs a fire extinguisher, and everyone should wear their emergency safety shutoff lanyard while the boat motors are running.”
With the increase in people, the lake tends to get crowded. Trooper Kennington said to respect every boat around you and be safe.
“Make sure you’re giving other boats plenty of room,” Kennington said. “If you’re unsure of what another boat’s doing you may need to just stop, slow down, and see what they’re gonna do. Just uh with the volume please be safe.”
One thing trooper Kennington wants to remind everybody is to not drink and operate a boat, or there will be consequences that follow.
“If you’re gonna drink and operate a vessel you’re going to be caught, and you’ll be charged boating under the influence, and you’ll go to jail,” Kennington said.
Troopers are expecting more people especially those stuck at home to come out this Memorial Day.
