VERNON, Fla. (WDHN) — A Washington County woman is in the hospital after she was reportedly shot and nearly strangled by her own husband, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Washington County deputies were called to the scene on Moss Hill Road at around 9:30 p.m Wednesday. Callers told the sheriff’s office that a man shot his wife and barricaded himself inside his home

Investigators said the shot was fired shortly after Reed accused his wife of cheating on him.

“After the second gunshot, the children ran to their mother’s side and were then threatened at gunpoint by Reed, causing them to flee the residence,” a release from the sheriff’s office states.

Deputies found the victim hiding under the back porch and took her to be treated by emergency personnel. She was then transported to a local hospital, where she is reported to be in critical condition.

Right before the SWAT Team made their way into the home, David Reed, 71, shot himself in the chest. Authorities found him in the kitchen took him into custody.

Reed now faces an attempted murder charge.
