American Legion hands out poppies to support veterans

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The American Legion of Dothan passed out red poppies at Planet Fitness Friday afternoon.

The red poppy, a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice, is worn on this day every year by Americans since world war one to honor those who have served and died in all wars for our freedom. It is used to remind Americans of sacrifices made by veterans while protecting the country and those who have worn our nation’s uniform.

“We want them to remember those that sacrificed for our country, and for the things we enjoy, it’s important,” said Diane Irby, president of the American Auxiliary, Unit 12. “We also accept donations to help serve those veterans that are still living. All of the proceeds from this 100% go to serving veterans.”

From the devastated landscape of the battlefields, the red poppy would grow and, thanks to a famous poem, become a powerful symbol of remembrance.
