DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Alabama has recently been recognized for its patriotism according to a new study by WalletHub.
Among all 50 states, Alabama ranks as the 19th most-patriotic state in 2019, making it one of only four southern states that made it to the Top 20. These other states are Florida (20), Virginia (14) and South Carolina (8).
Meanwhile, the title of most patriotic state was given to New Hampshire with its number one ranking. In contrast, New Jersey finished dead last in 50th place.
WalletHub determined each state’s level of patriotism by looking at two major dimensions: military engagement and civil engagement.
Military engagement levels were gauged by looking at the number of active and reserve military members in each state’s population at the time.
For its part, Alabama had the eighth highest level of military engagement in the United States. Alabama also ranked as the state with the fifth highest average numbers of enlistees.
Civic engagement took more factors into account, including participation in the 2016 election, civic education requirements and how involved the people of the states are in their communities.
On average, WalletHub found that red states were more patriotic than blue states. Also, the smaller the state was, the more patriotic it seemed to be.
