Airborne deer enters windshield and kills Chipley woman

GRACEVILLE, Fla. (WDHN) – Monday morning around 6:30 a.m., a Chipley woman died after an airborne deer that was struck by a truck on State Highway 77 entered the vehicle she was in.

Edna Morgan Griffin, 81, who was a passenger in the vehicle, succumbed to injuries she sustained in the accident. The driver of the car, Katherine Mills Comerford, 58, of Sneeds, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Southeast Health in Dothan for treatment.

Jessie Alton Barnes, 47, of Graceville, was driving the 2018 Dodge Ram that hit the deer initially when it proceeded to cross the highway. After initial impact with the truck, the deer went airborne and crashed into Comerford’s 2010 Ford Escape.

The deer reportedly went through Comerford’s car, hitting both the driver and passenger before exiting through the back window.

Barnes, along with both of the passengers in his truck, were not injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol, along with the Jackson County Fire Rescue and Graceville Volunteer Fire Department assisted in this case.
