LEVEL PLAINS, Ala (WDHN) — Over the last year, an intersection in Level Plains has claimed three lives in separate accidents.
On Thursday morning, another wreck at Coffee County Road 709 and U.S. Highway 84 sent at least one person to the hospital with what appeared to be serious injuries.
Earlier this month, a 64-year-old Enterprise man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a Mercedes-Benz at the intersection of Coffee County Road 709 and U.S. Highway 84. It’s along the Coffee-Dale county line, the third deadly wreck at that location this year.
“I would implore anyone who is concerned with that intersection to call the Department of Transportation in Troy,” Mayor Ronnie Thompson said. “I really believe squeaky wheel gets the grease, and we have to get something done because people are dying.”
On Thursday morning, Level Plains’ Volunteer Fire Chief Jamie Gatlin responded to a two-vehicle wreck at the same location. One person appeared seriously injured. He would like to see a red light installed to slow down traffic.
Drivers on 709 often run the stop sign and collide with oncoming east-west-bound traffic on Highway 84.
“You’ve got people regularly coming through here at 60 or more miles per hour, and when you hit a stationary object from the side, it usually causes a lot of damage,” Gatlin said.
Thompson is not sure how many lives it will take for state and county officials to make the intersection safer.
