DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Chris Smith was stabbed and left for dead.
“Leading up to the stabbing, I wanted to die, I just wanted to end it all,” Smith said. “I had thoughts of suicide and then the stabbing happened and it was just life-changing. I knew that I had a purpose, I wouldn’t have died four times if I didn’t have something to live for.”
Smith left Alabama and went north to attend college. The night of the stabbing, Smith was headed home after attending a Halloween Party.
“I was walking home and I remember wanting to take a short cut home, instead of going the long way. So I went through the rough part of Downtown and this guy came up behind me and said give me everything you have I have a knife” Smith said.
Experiencing death four times, it was time for Smith to conquer his thoughts of suicide and face his battle with mental illness. He used writing as a coping mechanism and published his first book “Standing On The Edge.”
“The characters in the book represent different forms of mental illness,” Smith said.
