Lakeside School relieves Safe Schools Initiative Award for third year

EUFAULA, Ala. (WDHN) — Attorney General Steve Marshall made a visit to The Lakeside School Thursday morning to present them with an award that shows they are one of the safest in Alabama.

The Lakeside School was selected as one of 10 winning schools in Alabama for the Attorney General’s Safe Schools Initiative Award of Excellence.

“We attempt to identify those schools that are exemplary best practices relating to school safety,” Marshall said. “They are an exemplary school in that area in the state. To be able to highlight their best practices, I think is a testament to the work of this community and wanting to make sure they have a commitment to keep kids safe.”

There are numerous factors that go into deciding who should win. Collaboration with law enforcement and emergency agencies, and strong crisis management preparation and training are among some of the factors the committee looks at.

“We do value safety and the environment at this school very highly, and we try each and every day to make sure safety is a priority,” Dean of Students Susan Hudspeth said.

2018 saw the highest number of applications since the award began in 2003. This is the third year Lakeside has been selected for the award, as the school previously received the honor in 2015 and 2017.

“It’s a reflection of the commitment to making sure the kids are safe, a recognition that school safety is integral to making sure that an academic program can thrive,” Marshall said. “I also think it sends a message to the parents of the students here that they’re going to make sure their kids are safe in this environment while they have them here.”

Schools were selected as winners for 2018 from each of the eight state school board districts as well as private schools for each state region.
