Houston County Sheriff’s Office investigating active phone scam

News

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Houston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating another phone scam.

The scammer reportedly pretends to be an investigator with the sheriff’s office while using a “spoofed number.”

The caller usually harasses the victim, making them believe they may be arrested for not cooperating. The scammers usually ask for money to be sent to them in different ways.

“Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza nor his Deputies or Investigators will not call telling you to put money on a green dot card, retail gift card, Western Union, money order, cashier’s check or any other means of transferring money,” a release from the sheriff’s office states.

Most of these callers are said to be from outside Alabama and the United States, putting these crimes under FBI jurisdiction and not the sheriff’s office’s.

In the meanwhile, victims are asked to follow these steps: “Hang up on them, block the number, REPORT them.”

You can report these crimes to the sheriff’s office by calling 334-677-4809.
