HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Houston County fiscal year ends Sept. 30. The 2020 fiscal budget was presented and according to the new 2019-2020 budget proposal the projected ending balance is estimated at $4.3 million dollars.

In the budget, 4 deputies slots were approved, but two will serve as SRO’S.

“Every deputy we have is assigned to a unit and I’m already shorting court as it is,” Major Rafferty said. “If you look at the manpower request deputies for court.”

The sheriff’s office requested to eliminate the budget specialist position, an additional deputy sergeant 14 additional deputies and salary increase for the Major and two captains and chief deputy.

The elimination of the budget specialist was approved and the four deputies were two of the SRO’s and two deputies at the courthouse and two captain’s salary increase and chief deputy.

“So technically what I really need four deputies slots, you’ve only approved two not including SRO’s but I need 4 slots for deputies, two to take care of the deputies that have been hired that are sitting in the dispatch slots and then the two new deputies for the tower so I need four, not two”Rafferty said.
