Corporal Austin Nowell, Deputy Dusty Oswalt, and Deputy Trevor Benefield were awarded the “Life Saving” award by Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza.
On October 21st, there was a report of a motorcycle accident and when the deputies arrived, they found the victim’s legs had been severed.
In an effort to save the victim’s life, Corporal Nowell instructed Deputies Oswalt and Benefield to return to their patrol units to retrieve their tourniquets.
Valenza says the tourniquets prevented the victim from bleeding to death which shows how important training is.
“I take pride in our deputies having some of the best training they can get, and when you can save the life of citizens by going through training it’s well worth it,” Valenza said.
Every deputy carries a tourniquet in their vehicle. The equipment is supplied to help save the life of the deputy or the life of a civilian.
