Gulf Shores band holds surprise graduation for student hurt in crash

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WKRG) — Imagine missing your high school graduation ceremony and your friends throwing you a surprise one.

That’s what happened to Dylan Stancil this week.

“We went through everything,” Dylan said. “I shook his hand, photos, the whole 9 yards. It was really nice.”

Dylan was supposed to walk across the stage to receive his diploma with his classmates Monday night but was involved in a wreck after leaving the rehearsal earlier that afternoon.

“I had a minor concussion and whiplash,” he said. “That was about it. I got pretty lucky.”

Dylan’s mom tells News 5 that a parent, Alicia Lee, organized the special ceremony for her son.

“I’m just glad we were able to pull this off for him and his mom,” Lee tells us.

The special ceremony was held in the band room at Gulf Shores High School.

Dylan plans to attend Auburn University in the fall.
