Geneva passes motion to partially close road where teens died Christmas night

GENEVA, Ala. (WDHN) — The Geneva City Council unanimously passed a motion to permanently close the section of roadway in which three high school students were killed Christmas night.

There were five students inside the vehicle. The two in the backseat survived with serious injuries when their vehicle jumped the levee on Westville Avenue. The driver lost control and the vehicle slid into a tree.

The section of closure will not affect any homeowners and the property owner will be given a key to the gate.

“The police, the city council want to ensure safety, and we will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of our roads,” Chief Tony Clemmons said.

In addition to a portion of Westville Avenue being close, the city council wants to install speed bumps on a levee road in Robert Fowler Park.
