COFFEE COUNTY — With much fanfare nearly a decade ago, the Coffee County Commission opened one of the state’s full-fledged tire-shredding facilities — located at the county landfill in the Victoria community.
The machinery transforms tires into rubber pellets and other materials that can be used in parks and playground equipment.
But this week, the Coffee County Commission gave approval for the facility to be leased purchased by a company in Clearwater, Florida.
“When it becomes more difficult working economically for us, not the tires but disposing of the tire chips themselves,” Coffee County Administrator Rod Morgan said.
Coffee County officials say they never saw the market they initially anticipated from the sale.
