First-time unemployment claims reach over 33 million as number of initial claims fall

(WDHN) — The Department of Labor reported another 3.2 million Americans filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week.

The Labor Department did factor in seasonal adjustments, which economists use to account for seasonal hiring fluctuations.

That brings the total number of initial claims filed since mid-March to 33.5 million.

In Alabama, 28,985 people filed for unemployment last week.

In Houston county, there were over 500 people.

While those numbers are staggering, it is the fifth week in a row that the number of initial claims fell.
