Dothan woman urges others to get screened for cancer after father’s death

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Dothan woman is encouraging local residents to take advantage of cancer screening tests in the Wiregrass following her father’s death from the disease.

Sarah Tavano said regular screenings can help detect cancer in the early stages. Reports show just in 2019, roughly 1.8 million people will be diagnosed with cancer — with breast cancer being the most common cancer diagnosis.

“It’s very important for you to go out speak with your healthcare provider, talk about any symptoms you may have, and get those screenings done before it’s too late,” Tavano said.

She said she and her dad have worked in the community to raise awareness about how cancer affects not just the patient but the family. Her dad lost his battle with cancer over the weekend.
