Dothan Gym combating mental illness through physical fitness

News

A new gym in Dothan is working to raise awareness of women’s mental health through physical fitness and self-defense.

Combat Mindset is partnering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Cogito Mental Health Services on an event Saturday, July 14 from 10-11:30 a.m.

For $10, you can take part in an hour and a half workout to get a feel for the new gym and all proceeds will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“I feel like there is a lot of people that have undergone issues with that (mental health) or that know somebody that has,” Lana Jones, the Combat Mindset fitness manager said. “We want to just bring awareness to the community and give people an outlet to have a better, healthier way to handle that and work through those things.”

Jones also said that she believes exercise is a good way to work through issues people go through when dealing with mental health because you can let out some stress in a healthy way.
