DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Last night Dothan Fire was dispatched to Oates Estates Apartments in response to fire alarms going off in the apartments.
“In a little over three minutes our first unit arrived on scene,” Dothan Fire Battalion Chief David Hasty said. “When they made it to the fire door, they found that room full of smoke inside with just a with just a few flames in there.”
The fire occurred around 7:30 p.m.
Dothan Fire evacuated everyone in the apartment building, extinguished the fire and checked to make sure there was no extension of the fire throughout the building.
“The sprinkler alarm system actually extinguished the fire all but just a little bit of it,” Hasty said. “It actually did what it’s suppose to do. Our units got there and were able to manage the small amount of fire at that point in time.”
The fire didn’t do much damage itself, but it has put some residents out of their apartments for some time.
Red Cross put up one family and the other two had family members they could stay with.
“So the fire floor was on the third floor and that put two apartments up under it,” Hasty said. “So, they didn’t get damaged by the fire, but they were damaged by the water that came out of the sprinkler system. So there was one head that was activated, and it was due to the water damage that trickled down to the third floor, to the second on down to the first floor.”
Dothan Fire doesn’t currently know the cause of the fire, but are still investigating what happened.
