DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Press Thornton Future Masters Tournament is one of the riches junior golf tournaments held in Dothan at the end of June each year. The event brings tons of excitement especially during a downed time like now.
“We are thrilled that we will be able to host this again and we have a full field. We have over 200 on the waiting list people are just ready to play and I think get back to some normalcy in life,” Tournament Coordinator Angela Turner said.
The tournament will be one of the first sporting events in the Wiregrass since reopening the state. Just under 500 golfers will be competing in this year’s week long tournament for that champion navy blue jacket and trophy.
With the many golfers and their families coming to visit the circle city for a week, the golf event will not only satisfy sports fans but it will produce a massive amount of dollars which is crucial for businesses who suffered during the COVID-19 shutdown.
“Ball tournament over a week can bring in half a million dollars or more and we talking about in a week’s time. We’re excited for that our sales tax revenue was down by 17% last month so we’re hoping maybe we’ll kinda catch up,” Mayor Mark Saliba said.
“Friends, cousins, uncles are all coming to town to see them compete and they have to sleep in hotels, they have to eat. They’re gonna be leaving their dollars here in Dothan and those dollars have surely been missed the last few months,” President of Visit Dothan Aaron McCreight said.
The tournament will take place June 20-27 at the Dothan Country Club.
