SYLACAUGA, Ala. (WIAT) — The community is coming to the aid of an animal foster dad who lost his home and at least a dozen animals in a tragic fire.
It happened to a Greater Birmingham Humane Society worker on Monday.
Right now, there’s a move to help him get back on his feet.
Shane Ricks loves animals so much that on his off time he and his girlfriend foster animals at home.
“They just have a gift for helping an animal learn to trust again when we have angels like that in our community we have to take care of them,“ said Allison Black Cornelius with the GBHS.
Ricks tells CBS 42 his new home in Sylacauga went up in flames with at least a dozen animals inside.
Not only did he and his girlfriend lose everything they own, but 17 animals also died in the fire.
Five of those animals were foster animals.
“He and Devon both are gonna have to have a lot of counseling,“ Cornelius said. “When I was on the phone with them and they called me, just the sounds I could hear through the phone are just something I don’t, I don’t even know how you recover from something like that.“
Both Ricks and his girlfriend tried to save as many animals as possible.
