ABBEVILLE, Ala. (WDHN) — The city of Abbeville is in the thick of campaigning season and with 4 candidates running for Mayor campaigning around town is at an all-time high.
“My name is Billy Helms, and I’m running for re-election as mayor of the city of Abbeville,” Said Incumbent Abbeville Mayor, Billy Helms.
As the incumbent mayor, Helms has worked for the city of Abbeville for 52 years, and his number one objective is repaving streets, without putting the city in debt.
“I’ve had a good 4 years I think, we’ve had our trials but we’ve handled them well I think, and I’d like to finish some projects I have started now in the next four years,” Helms said.
Just down the road outside of Jimmy’s BBQ & Pizza is the next candidate.
“Hi my name is Jimmy Money and I’m running for Mayor of Abbeville,” said Abbeville Mayoral Candidate, Jimmy Money.
Money has lived in Abbeville for 48 years and owns his own business in town. He would like to help change the image of Abbeville to a more positive one, while bringing more industrial jobs to the city.
“I’m a realist, I understand I’ve been on the city and industrial board for 10- 12 years and we’ve come really close to landing some industry I know how hard it is, and my goal is to work with what we have make sure we don’t lose any of what we have and at the same time look for others and see what we…Take care of your own that’s what I try to do,” Money said.
You may remember this next candidate from his time on the basketball court.
“My name is Greg Grimsley and I’m running for Mayor of the city of Abbeville,” Said Abbeville Mayoral Candidate, Greg Grimsley.
Grimsley served on the city council from 2004 to 2012 and says he’s no stranger to how city government works. If elected he wants to improve roads with grants and revitalize the recreation department.
“I plan on getting good jobs for the kids when they go off to school and do what they are supposed to they can come back and get a good job. It is time for a change here in the city of Abbeville and it’s time for a positive change, change we can believe in, and change we can trust in,” Grimsley said.
This next candidate is also no stranger to city government.
“My name is Jim Giganti and I’m running for mayor for the city of Abbeville,” said Abbeville Mayoral Candidate, Jim Giganti.
After serving as the mayor of Abbeville from 2012-2016, Giaganti lost by 26 votes. He says he’s very knowledgeable of City Operations and wants to make the citizens happy.
“I just want to get back in make our residents happy again, there is so much unrest now, people aren’t content with the things that the city is doing now, so what we are trying to do is basically get back in as mayor and see if we can’t correct those issues,” Giganti said.
Something all 4 candidates agreed on is the importance for all registered voters to cast their votes. Election Day is Tuesday, August 25th.
