220 tons of chicken carcasses stink up northern Coffee County

COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — An odor that could be best described as rancid covered a large portion of northern Coffee County over the weekend.

An estimated 220 tons of mature chickens were disposed at the landfill in the Victoria community.

Following a lightning strike at several poultry houses outside of Brantley in Crenshaw County, a complete power failure accompanied by triple-digit temperatures led to the death of tens of thousands of chickens.

Coffee County officials said the birds were buried within minutes of being trucked to the regional facility.
