COVID-19 unlikely to transmit through eyes, Dothan ophthalmologist says

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Doctor Anthony Fauci suggested that people should be wearing eye protection to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Fauci explained during an interview that he believes people should be wearing a face mask and some type of covering for their eyes.

“The minimal things you might want to do is you could use just a mask and eye goggles and possibly gloves,” he said.

Local ophthalmologist Marnix Heersink said that if you are smart and continue to be careful, you should not feel the need to wear eye protection as the virus cannot transmit through the eye.

“Then from a patient’s point of view, if you hear this you say, ‘gee what should I be doing?’ and I think that if you’re just generally careful, and if you have any worries about it, then you could wear glasses, you could wear shields, but generally, there’s not any evidence there’s transmission.

Transmission of the virus cannot occur in the eyes but if you are worried, feel free to take extra precaution.
