Tropical Storm Karen Struggles To Become Hurricane

It is possible Karen could become a minimal hurricane but, with shear increasing as the storm moves north, significant strengthening appears unlikely at this time.
Tropical Storm Karen appeared Thursday afternoon to be disorganized and struggling to gain strength. The storm is encountering strong shear which is inhibiting intensification. It is possible Karen could become a minimal hurricane but, with shear increasing as the storm moves north, significant strengthening appears unlikely at this time.

A hurricane watch remains in effect from Grand Isle, LA to Indian Pass, FL. Winds, as of 1:00 pm Thursday were 65 miles per hour. Tropical Storm Karen is moving to the north northwest at 12 miles per hour. A gradual turn to the north and decrease in forward speed is anticipated in the next 24 hours.

The effects of the storm on the Wiregrass area appear uncertain. Heavy rain and gusty winds are possible but significant damage is not expected at this time. Rainfall amounts could range between 2 and 5 inches.
