Record cold forecast forecast this week

Lows early Tuesday may fall to 16 degrees with strong winds making it feel like the single digits. That would set a record low for the date---21 degrees in 2004.
Temperatures that may prove to be the coldest of this winter will invade the Wiregrass early this week. A cold front is expected to pass early Monday and, behind it, conditions will turn bitter.

The National Weather Service predicts highs Monday will reach only the mid 30’s with sustained winds of 25 miles per hour and even higher gusts. When the wind is factored in, it should feel like 15-20 degrees.

However, Dothan’s record low for the first week of January is 11 degrees on January 9, 1970. The coldest recorded during the month is 0 on January 21, 1985. The following day is was 1 degree.

Things won’t get any better Tuesday with temperatures struggling to break the freezing mark of 32 degrees. Winds will subside by then.

After a low of about 20 Tuesday night the weather will improve dramatically. Highs Wednesday should be near 50 degrees and, by Thursday, they should reach the 60’s. Saturday’s forecast is for a high of 70.
