Former officer indicted on student sex charges

Trial for Lanice Bonds scheduled for late March
A former Dothan police officer accused of having illegal sex with a student while working with a school resource officer has been indicted. Court records show Lanice Bonds, 37, was indicted by a grand jury that recently heard evidence in the case.

Bonds was arrested in September for violating a law that prohibits school personnel from engaging in sexual activity with a student under the age of nineteen. The law was recently passed by the Alabama legislature. In cases not involving school employees the legal age of consent is generally sixteen.

Sources close to the investigation say Bonds confessed when confronted with the allegations. He was terminated by Police Chief Greg Benton.

He was released from jail in early October after a judge lowered bond from $250,000 to $50,000.

Trial has been scheduled for March 31.
