Judge Lowers Bond For Officer Accused On Sex Charges

Lanice Bonds could be released from jail within hours
A Houston County district judge has slashed bond for a jailed police officer held on sex charges to only twenty percent of its original amount. Lanice Clifton Bonds, 37, could be freed from jail within hours according to those familiar with the case.

In his ruling Tuesday, Judge Benjamin Lewis lowered Bond’s bail from $250,000 to $50,000. His decision came after an October 4 hearing seeking the reduction. Bond’s attorney, Cada Carter, argued that holding his client on the higher amount was essentially the same as holding him without bond. Carter contended $250,000 is almost impossible to post. The reduction was opposed by District Attorney Doug Valeska.

Bonds, a resource officer at Dothan High School, was arrested September 27 on a charge of School Employee Sex. Investigators say he had an illegal relationship with a student under the age of 19. Lewis ordered Bonds to have no contact with the alleged victim.
