Child dies, woman critical from wreck injuries

A two year old girl was killed when the SUV in which she was riding was struck by a semi truck
A young girl involved in a traffic wreck late Wednesday has died from injuries she sustained in the accident. Family friends confirm Pasleigh Carroll died about midnight at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She is believed to be two years old.

The driver of the SUV, identified by friends as Jana Calhoon, was critically hurt and, according to Facebook posts, underwent surgery at the hospital.

Police have not released many details of the accident but it’s believed a semi pulled into onto the Columbia Highway from Omussee Road and into the path of the SUV. The accident shut down traffic on the roadway several hours.

Ms. Calhoon’s Facebook page shows she is employed at Eastside Daycare which is near the accident scene. A source familiar with the situation said Calhoon was taking Pasleigh home when the accident occurred though that has not been confirmed by police.

Ms. Calhoon’s three year old daughter was also in the vehicle but not seriously hurt. Neither was the truck driver injured.
