Dothan opens warming shelter, offers cold weather safety tips

Temperatures are expected to be in the teens overnight Monday and will warm only to or slightly above freezing Tuesday.
Dothan has opened a warming station for those who feel they may be endangered due of the unusually cold weather. The First Church of the Nazarene on Honeysuckle Road will be open until 8 am Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to be in the teens overnight Monday and will warm only to or slightly above freezing Tuesday.

We’re also being warned of cold weather dangers. “We do see an increase in home fires during periods of extreme cold, such as forecasted over the next two days, partially due to the number of space heaters in operation,” said Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams.

The Dothan Fire Department offers the following tips to home owners:

•Test your smoke detectors to ensure they operate properly

• If using a space heater, ensure you maintain 48 inches of clearance around the
heater and do not use extension cords

• If you are using a kerosene heater, ensure that you are using the proper fuel
and never fill the reservoir indoors

• Ensure all space heaters are turned off or unplugged when leaving the home
