Students will be able to move into the University’s residence halls beginning on Saturday, Aug. 9, and a number of TROY faculty and staff, as well as members of the community will be on hand to assist with hospitality and moving between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday move-in will take place between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Fall semester classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 13, on the Troy Campus.
Troy University alumnus Mucha Murapa will serve as the keynote speaker for the Odyssey Convocation for new students on Sunday, Aug.10. The convocation, designed to introduce new students and their parents to the University’s customs, traditions, people and places, will begin at 3 p.m. in Trojan Arena.
“The Odyssey Convocation is an amazing moment for our entering students,” said Dr. Hal Fulmer, associate provost and dean of first-year studies and undergraduate studies. “It’s the moment when the Trojan journey begins for our incoming class. Every great story has a first page and the Odyssey Convocation is that page for our students.”
Murapa was born in Manchester, England, and moved to London in his early teens to be based at the Lawn Tennis Association, where he was a member of the national tennis squad. He came to TROY as a member of the Trojans’ tennis team and represented the University twice at the national championships.
Away from the courts, Marapa majored in broadcast journalism and marketing. He was active in a number of projects both on and off campus, including working in the Office of University Relations, serving with the campus television station and working with WTBF, a local radio station.
Following graduation, Marapa returned to the United Kingdom and began a successful career in the golf and leisure industry, overseeing marketing and management as the youngest-ever club secretary at Buckinghamshire Golf Club, one of England’s leading clubs. He would later become a golf marketing and events consultant and was instrumental in forming the Golf Consultant’s Association of Great Britain.
As a consultant, Marapa’s clients included a South African resort voted “World Resort of the Year” in 2006 and an Irish property voted “European Resort of the Year” in 2010.
In 2010, Marapa began working with small businesses, helping them transition to digital and social media marketing. He now provides digital and social media marketing services and is currently writing his first book on digital marketing, which is expected to be released this fall.
