Last year, the university started a Troy for Troops Center at its Montgomery and Troy campuses.  The center was established to support current military members and vets as they become full time students, and one will soon open at the Dothan campus.

"We are always very pleased to have our processes and our education programs validated by organizations such as U.S. News & World Report," said Lance Tatum, vice president for Global Campus at Troy University.

There's a lot of information to sort through when choosing the best program.  And veterans can use those rankings to find the programs that best suit their needs.

Based on U.S. News and World Report rankings, Troy University is one of the best colleges to attend if you're a military veteran pursuing an online degree.

"Everyone's a consumer these days; everyone's trying to spend their money wisely.  And so this is just a way that, uh, veterans and active duty military can see what Troy has to offer and how we rank against our peers," Tatum said.

Meeting the qualifications for a top national veteran ranking is no easy task.  The school must already be ranked for its online programs.

"From there, they look at additional criteria: Are you a member of the Yellow Ribbon Program, are you a part of what they call Dante's, which is the CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) part of the Department of Defense that allows active duty and veteran students to gain academic credit through their experience," said Tatum.

It has the 13th best online graduate nursing program for veterans, and it ranks 16th for its online education programs.

Troy's online bachelor's programs rank 27th in the nation.

The university also ranks in the top 20 in the region for best colleges for online programs for vets.

"It takes a special talent, a certain amount of attention to detail in terms of understanding the culture and needs of active duty and veterans."

And he says Troy's history of programs, dating back to the ‘50s, keeps the university in touch with military students' needs.
