Troy beats Texas State, Trojans are #NOLABound

A huge surge to start the second half helped push Troy past Texas State.
TROY, Ala. – A huge surge to start the second half helped push Troy (11-19, 6-12 SBC) past Texas State (8-23, 4-14 SBC), 72-50, on senior night at Trojan Arena. With the win, the Trojans earned the eighth and final seed for the Sun Belt Championships in New Orleans next week.

“We picked a great time to play our best game of the season,” said head coach Phil Cunningham. “The team came out with intensity tonight and fought hard all night long.”

The Trojans will face UALR at 6 p.m. on Thursday in New Orleans. The game will be broadcast on the Sun Belt Network. Troy split its season series with UALR, with the road team winning each contest.

Troy held a seven point advantage at the break, but came out on fire in the second half, starting with a 10-0 run, and never looked back. Troy would go on to lead by as many as 26 points.

The Trojans were firing on all cylinders on the night. Hunter Williams continued to light it up from beyond the arc, going 5-of-9. With his five 3’s on the night, Williams set a new Troy Division I record for made 3’s in a season with 96. Current assistant coach Ben Fletcher had held the record with 92, set during the 2002-03 season.

Williams finished with 19 points on the night, while Antoine Myers had 15. Kevin Thomas and Jeff Mullahey each scored in double-figures as well, finishing with 13 and 12 points respectively.

Troy shot 48.3 percent (25-of-58) from the field and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from beyond the arc. Troy outrebounded Texas State 40-26 on the night. Troy dominated in the paint, outscoring Texas State 38-22.

Troy honored its seniors prior to the game as they played their final contest inside Trojan Arena.
