QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD FINALISTS AND S.T.E.M. AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED AT ANNUAL ARRIVAL CEREMONY




 
Today, the Miss America contestants celebrated in front of the historic Boardwalk Hall, the birthplace of this great American tradition.  The contestants' arrival ceremony kicks off a week of festivities and events around Atlantic City leading into a week of preliminary competitions culminating in the live telecast on ABC,
Sunday, September 14 at 8 p.m. (EST).
 
On hand to announce the scholarship finalists from the 53 contestants for this ceremony were a host of organizational and governmental luminaries, including Kim Guadagno, New Jersey's Lt. Governor and Secretary of State; Don Guardian, Honorable Mayor of Atlantic City; John Palmieri, Executive Director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority; Liza Cartmell, President of the Atlantic City Alliance; David Tilton, President and Chief Executive Officer of AtlantiCare; Sam Haskell, III, Miss America Chairman & CEO; Sharon Pearce, Miss America President and Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri.

The
Quality of Life Awards were introduced in 1988 to recognize contestants who excel in their commitment to community service. These awards recognize those contestants who shine in their involvement with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the national platform of the Miss America Organization, and their own personal platform issue.
 
The winner of the Quality of Life Award will receive a $6,000 scholarship, the first runner-up will win a $4,000 scholarship, and the second runner-up will win a $2,000 scholarship.

  • Miss Virginia Courtney Paige Garrett

Today, the Miss America Organization re-announced the STEM scholarship finalists. These scholarships will allow women to pursue numerous careers in the sciences and mathematics, fields that continue to grow exponentially as we enter into a new age of technology and medicine. The lives of women who wish to pursue careers in STEM subjects will significantly change as they engage in dynamic careers where women can thrive and grow as humans, learners, and teachers for future generations to come.

The five recipients of the S.T.E.M. will receive additional scholarships of $5,000 each.
