Student leaders saves lives

Local student organizes blood drive for scholarship opportunity.
"Right now i'm not sure how I am going to pay for everything, so definitely trying to get as many scholarships as possible and this is my first inciative that i've taken to get a schoalrship and if it works out it'll be a big one."

College tuition on average can cost up to $10,000 per year or more. That’s a pretty penny for most students, so they turn to other resources to help pay.

Anna Chan will be attending the University of Alabama next fall and she decided to think outside the box for some scholarship money.

"I was looking into it and it said it was a lot of work but the chances of getting a scholarship were high,” said Northview High School Senior Anna Chan. “Because not a lot of people were willing to take on the challenge, so i went ahead and contacted the local recruiter."

Anna will be hosting a blood drive through the Red Cross. It’s up to her to plan, organize and deliver at least 25 sign ups, but she'll take away more than the possibility of scholarship money.

“We see that years and years go by and generation after generation there's less and less blood donors,” said Red Cross Account Manager Rebekah Noel, “So, what we want to do is show high school students and young people what its like to donate what its like to be involved in the blood program. It's not scary and its not hard and its actually really fun and a fun way to make a really big impact."

If Anna has at least 25 people sign up she can be put in a drawing to win $1,000 and if she has 50 people she has the chance to win $2,000.

But winning the scholarship or not Anna knows shes helping out her community.

"I'm just really hoping to take away the importance of blood drives and blood donation and just really helping other people understand how important it is and how we can save lives by really taking 10 to 15 minutes out of our days to make a blood donation,” said Chan.

The blood drive will be held August 11th from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the ST. Columba Catholic Church.

If you would like to help Anna out you can go to Red Cross Blood and select Student Leaders Save Lives - Anna Chan. You will then be asked to select a donation time and fill out some personal information.

For every one person who donates blood three lives can be saved.
