Sheriff deputies pursued Billy Wayne Lomanek over the last several days.

They blocked off an area in Skipperville and called in a k-9 unit.

"He went pretty deep into the woods towards County Road 33 and came back after numerous turns and twists, and all.  He was headed back toward County Road 70, which would have been back in the general area toward his residence," said Sheriff Wally Olson.

An aviation unit directed law enforcement to his exact location in a field off County Road 70.

That's when he engaged in a gun fight with deputies and was shot.  Lomaneck sustained non-life threatening injuries.

"It weighs heavy on you, you know, you have your community that you take into consideration you have to provide safety for,” Olson said.  “Because an individual that's on the run like this can do a lot of things.  He can go into a dwelling and obtain hostages, he can steal a vehicle or he can pull a car over that's going down the road."

And while no members of law enforcement were injured, a K-9 was killed.

"Although it's an animal, it's also someone that they become their partner and their friend they train with daily.  You form a relationship and a bond.  A lot of truth can be said in a 'dog is a man's best friend,'" said Olson.

It's a situation Olson says happens all too often.

"It's a sign of the times that we're in.  Unfortunately, our community was touched this time, it will be another community next time, you know.  It's everywhere,” Olson said.

Lomaneck was still at a hospital recovering from his injuries this afternoon.

Authorities say additional charges are expected, including one for attempted murder.
